The lethal dose is almost invisible – just 2 milligrams, equivalent to a few grains of sand, can cause fatal respiratory depression. What makes this crisis particularly insidious is how fentanyl is disguised in counterfeit pills or mixed with other substances without the user's knowledge.

The fentanyl crisis has accelerated at an alarming rate. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has seized more fentanyl in the last two years than the previous five combined—a stark indicator of the growing flood of this deadly substance into American communities

Illicit fentanyl is frequently mixed into heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and pressed into counterfeit prescription pills. The drug's colorless, odorless properties make it virtually impossible for users to detect, leading to accidental overdoses.
